1/2 cup warm water
2 tbsp active dry yeast
2 tsp sugar
Dissolve yeast and sugar in warm water and let stand 10 minutes.
3-1/2 cups warm water
1/2 cup veg. oil or shortening
1/4 cup sugar
4 tsp salt
9-1/2 – 10- 1/2 cups flour (or more if needed)
Measure warm water into a large mixing bowl; add sugar, oil and salt. Add yeast mixture and mix well. Stir in sufficient flour to make a soft, workable dough. Turn dough out on a lightly floured surface; knead 10 – 15 minutes until dough is smooth and elastic. Form dough into a ball and place in greased bowl, turning once to grease the top. Cover and let rise 50 minutes or until doubled. Punch down and shape into 4 round balls. Cover and let rest 20 minutes. Form into loaves and place in greased 8-1/2″ x 4-1/2″ loaf pans. Brush tops with oil. Cover and let rise 50-55 minutes. Bake in 190° C (375° F) oven 35-40 minutes or until bread test done. Remove from pans and cool on wire rack. Can also be made into buns.
